Also at this 'corner' could be seen what appeared to be a long piece of wood whose shape and general appearance seemed to be the same as that of the shorter piece found by the Dixons in 1872 at the bottom of this shaft. It seems almost certain that this longer piece of wood (if wood it is) is contemporaneous with the construction of the Great Pyramid. It is thus an ideal sample that could be Carbon 14 dated in order to give an accurate age for the construction of the pyramid. So far, however, this wooden rod has not yet been retrieved by Dr. Zahi Hawass, the Director-General of the Giza monuments, in spite of the many requests made by Gantenbrink and others to re-explore the shafts of the Queen's Chamber.

The confirmation that the 'cedar wood' and the granite ball were found in the northern shaft and the 'bronze hook' in the southern shaft is given by John Dixon in an interview he had with Mr. H.W. Chrisholm, Warden of the Standards, who reported his testimony in the article in NATURE of Dec. 26, 1872. However in a private letter to Piazzi Smyth dated Nov. 23, 1872, after describing the shafts in the Queen's Chamber, Dixon wrote: 'It is here, in the northern shaft, that we found the tools…'. Since John Dixon described the 'bronze hook' elsewhere as being a 'tool of some sort', there is an element of doubt in which of the two shafts this particular item was found.
